There comes a moment when “surviving” stops being admirable and starts feeling like slow-motion drowning. You tell yourself you’re fine. You keep showing up. But deep down, something knows—you’re not living anymore. You’re simply holding yourself upright, keeping the mask on. That was me.
In 2019, I lost my partner. He was kind, traditional, handsome, energetic, family-oriented… Losing him shattered every part of my identity. The dreams we planned, the life we built, the future I thought I understood–it all collapsed overnight. And then came more loss… and the pandemic.
Locked behind closed borders, I was left alone with grief, emptiness, and a system that offered forms, phone numbers, and waiting lists instead of connection. I needed humanity. I needed meaning. I needed myself again.
The Awakening
When everything I once identified with disappeared—partner, career, identity, purpose—I realized there was only one person left to meet: myself. A terrifying and strangely merciful realization.
One night, surrounded by boxes I couldn’t bear to pack, I asked: “What now? Who am I?”
The answer wasn’t logical. It was a whisper. A vision of a life filled with warmth, color, healing, and community.
So I followed it.
The Journey South
I booked a one-way ticket to México—Cancún first, because it still had open borders and the soft landing of familiar faces. When Cancún didn’t feel like “ours,” my daughter and I listened to the whispers from other travelers: “Go to Puerto Vallarta.”
And when someone told us that the regularization process in Jalisco was faster and more humane than in Quintana Roo, that was the sign.
We rented a minivan, packed our lives into suitcases, bedding, crystals, a speaker, and our cat Michi—and began driving west.
From jungle to desert, mountain passes to cobblestone towns—we followed the sun across Mexico. The road gave us back our laughter, our song, our breath. For the first time in years, I felt alive.
Arriving in Vallarta
When we arrived in Puerto Vallarta, the air felt different. Softer. Calmer. Forgiving. Home.
Within weeks, our humanitarian residency was approved. I felt grounded, legally and spiritually, as if this place didn't ask me to earn my worth—only to be present.
Time slowed. Days blurred sweetly into each other. The ocean taught patience. The jungle reminded us to breathe. The sunsets taught us that endings can also be beautiful.
A Sanctuary for Healing
Living here, we met countless others who were rebuilding: Canadians, Europeans, South Americans… women like me, crafting new identities in a place where it finally felt safe to heal.
Banderas Bay isn’t just paradise—it’s a living sanctuary. A global hub for holistic healing and integrative medicine:
- Stem cell therapy
- Ozone treatment
- Yoga retreats
- Sound healing & reiki
- Ancestral cacao ceremonies
Here, Western science and ancient wisdom live side by side. And woven through it all is something rare: genuine humanity.
Becoming My Next Self
I came here to rebuild—to create, to connect, to remember that identity is something we can choose. Vallarta gave me permission:
- To begin again
- To laugh louder
- To live barefoot and unbothered
- To trust joy again
If you’ve gone through loss, burnout, or the quiet ache of a life that no longer fits—you already know that whisper. It’s not fear. It’s an invitation.
I followed mine all the way to the sea… and somehow, it led me back to myself.
If you see me someday—bright hair, beach bag, drink in hand or dancing at sunset—come say hi. I’ll remind you:
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
You only need to be willing to begin.
