LA NOSTALGIA ,
This creation is the work of the internationally acclaimed sculptor Ramiz Barquet, who is from Mexico City but has resided in Puerto Vallarta for many years. Barquet is probably better known for his monumental sculptures, many of which are well recognized symbols of this city. One of the most famous is Nostalgia, which portrays a couple sitting on the seafront.This sculpture was made by Barquet in honor of his wife, Nelly, but it was also inspired by his relentless quest for a meaningful existence. His work was the poetry in his life. Ramiz and Nelly fell in love and became engaged as teenagers, contrary to the wishes of their parents, who sent them to schools in different countries to keep them apart. Each of them married someone else and raised families , but they both got divorced later on. Twenty-seven years after they had last been together, they bumped into each other in a flower market in Mexico City one day before Mother´s Day, when they were visiting their respective mothers.
They kept in touch and Ramiz started to visit Puerto Vallarta often to spend more time with Nelly. They had been seeing each other for about a year when , after having dinner in Nelly´s restaurant ´Las Palomas´one evening, they went for a long stroll along the seafront. They sat down on a bench and gazed southwards at the last light of the setting sun. They started talking nostalgically about what would have happened if they had gotten married as teenagers. Ramiz, a shy and modest man, had been thinking about proposing marriage to Nelly , but he was determined to ask her the question very soon and decideding that, if she accepted, he would make a sculpture on that exact spot to capture that moment they were sharing on the bench. Nelly and Ramiz got married in the 1970´s and in 1984 Nostalgia was unveiled on he seafront. Newlyweds and lovers have since made this a traditional place to visit and take photos of themselves.
